After reading the post by the OP-ED Minority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), you would be forgiven for thinking that the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Labor Relations Board was out to smother the life out of the economy - for fun. And you'd be forgiven for thinking that Obama was encouraging the class struggle and secretly plan to raise taxes on people who can least afford it at a time when they at least can afford. But there's no plot secret. Obama was honest, consistent and clear about who should pay their fair share.
"But the policy of division has pitched up, driven by efforts to encourage class warfare," Cantor wrote. "For example, although he often speaks of millionaires, billionaires and business owners pay their" fair share "to behind closed doors the president admits that wants to raise taxes on the $ 200,000 individual per year and families and small businesses earn $ 250 000 per year.
""Behind closed doors"?
"I can promise to do business. Under my plan no family making less than $ 250,000 a year to see a tax increase. It is my income tax, not paying taxes, not your capital gains taxes, no taxes ".
It was then that candidate Obama in New Hampshire in 2008. In a speech in which he criticized in April, the "road to prosperity", authored by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), called for eliminating the Bush tax cuts for the rich. So widely known is his promise to eliminate the Bush tax cuts for families earning over $ 250,000 ($ 200,000 for individuals) that marks PolitiFact its inability to make a "broken promise". In fact, Bush's tax cuts remain intact in the final agreement which raised the debt ceiling. But not for long. The extension of tax cuts to expire in December 2012.
As Ezra Klein said long ago, Obama and Democrats in Congress does not have to do any of this happen. However, you better believe the battle took place in order to keep everyone. I expect the negotiations. Read this piece last May by Andrew Ross Sorkin to understand how the $ 250,000 became the magic number. But it must be shared sacrifice, if America is to dig out of its huge debt hole. The very rich as Warren Buffett is champing at the bit to help. The American public is demanding higher taxes for the rich. Obama and the American people was aware of wanting this to happen. So when the Cantor and the Republicans to start listening to the American people?
